Under the leadership of ALIWA Fellow Dr Kelechi Ohiri, Director-General of Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Authority reported health insurance enrolment of more than 22 million Nigerians, a 35% year-on-year increase. The progress reflects collaboration across government, healthcare providers, employers and development partners to translate policy into wider access to care.
Alongside this growth, the NHIA reported stronger consumer protection, resolving 3,878 complaints and refunding more than ₦14.2 million to enrollees. These efforts highlight the importance of accountable institutions and responsive public service in ensuring that expanded coverage delivers meaningful benefits to the people it serves.
